Because a police report is required to prevent continued victimization by inaccurate financial and credit records, every law enforcement agency should have a policy to accept victims reports of identity crime, regardless of jurisdictional concerns or investigative capabilities. Assess your agency's strategies for handing identity crime using the following checklist: * I have a written policy requiring field personnel to accept identity crime reports from any victim. * I have at least one person designated to handle identity crime reports that may be received. * I am aware of and periodically review the FTC and IDSafety.org web sites for updated information and crime prevention tips, and have filed this information in a readily accessible place. * My agency has identity crime prevention material available for the public. * I have identified a local, regional or state investigative agency that handles identity crimes. * I have established at least one personal contact with an appropriate member of the above agency.

Identity crime continues to rise throughout the U.S. and the world; yet, from a day-to-day operational perspective within the law enforcement community, not much has changed since this type of crime came to prominence in the 1990s. There have certainly been many socalled initiatives, task forces, committees, commissions, and political pronouncements during the past few years.
