Summary
we're calling them The Hampton Roads 100, a list of people - and one legume - who were born, raised or lived in our region of Virginia and who gained fame or rose to prominence in their fields. When we started this quest, many in the office doubted we could find enough people to fill our quota, but as it turned out, we were forced to make some tough decisions (see "5 who didn't make the cut" on Page 7). Many on our list are athletes or entertainers, but you'll also find authors, politicians, businessmen and civil rights activists, as well as a suspected witch, a really tall guy and a test-tube baby. One was born before British colonists arrived on our shores in 1607. And one, that famous legume, wears a monocle, carries a cane and pushes peanuts for a living. Most are individuals, but some - like the team that caught Osama bin Laden - are a group. Peer inside to see our choices, and go online to find out more about each one. When we were done, we couldn't help but be proud of all the diverse talent the region has produced. We're sure you'll agree with some of our picks and question why we overlooked others, but that's part of the fun of exercises like these - to start people talking. - The Daily Break staff
