ICBA leaders testified before congressional committees eight times in March to address timely issues affecting community banks. Overzealous Field Examinations ICBA Chairman Mike Menzies, a community banker from Maryland, called on Congress to address overzealous field examination practices hindering some community bank lending. Menzies said many community bankers report that field examiners are demanding overly aggressive write-downs and reclassifications of viable commercial real estate loans. Make the Deposit Insurance System More Equitable ICBA SVP and Director of Congressional Affairs Steve Verdier urged Congress to fix inequities in the deposit insurance system for community banks. Verdier asked lawmakers to remedy rules that, for example, require community banks to pay about 30% of FDIC premiums while they hold only about 20% of all banking system assets.
