'Hybrid' Bank Earns Environmental, Neighborhood Praise

It is said that too many cooks spoil the broth. But for a St. Paul, Minn., bank, talking with its neighbors resulted in a new, energy-efficient building that blends in with its St. Anthony Park neighborhood. The $4.7 million, 17,600-squarefoot Park Midway Bank is the first bank in Minnesota to be LEED-accredited from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED is an acronym for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design." Along with seeking the LEED designation, Park Midway Bank officials and the project architect, HTG Architects of Eden Prairie, Minn., also worked with St. Anthony Park neighborhood groups to finalize a design. Architects Jeff Pflipsen and Chayna Nelson, who handles LEED paperwork for HTG, said the Como Avenue site for the new building helped achieve LEED accreditation.

They picked a site that suited green well, Nelson said, adding that the location is on a bus line and in an area that may get light rail service in the future.
