Emotions can have a significant influence on the financial success of any organization. Companies dominated by negative emotions, including stress, anxiety and fear, may be undermined by poor attitudes, higher absenteeism, low productivity and industrial accidents. Meanwhile, those driven by positive employee emotions are able to improve customer satisfaction, business performance and stockholder satisfaction. Communicators should learn how to shape and harness these latent emotions in their organizations if they want to contribute to the competitiveness of their companies. To harness positive emotions, communicators should disseminate information about company goals, make sure that people understand these goals, and win the emotional commitment of employees to company goals. Employees should be guided by passion, pride and commitment to make them successful contributors to company goals.

Hurricanes look great from space.

Emotions are as powerful as any force of nature. The Marketing and Communication Agency (MCA) research at the IABC international conference in New Orleans shows many companies may have a hurricane of negative emotion on their hands, which could damage company performance. Communicators have a role to play in shaping and harnessing the latent emotions in their organizations - positive or negative. Only by channeling those forces can companies embody the statement "employees are our greatest asset."
