I couldn't help thinking of the speech Satan makes in Time Bandits. If he'd been in charge of creation, says Satan, "I would have started with lasers, 8 o'clock, day one!" Damn straight. And shiny stainless-steel robot bodies with USB ports, external wombs and downloadable digital "souls." That's intelligent design. What we've actually got is madness on flesh stilts.

After eye-gorging on all that "plastinated" human muscle tissue, I felt incredibly hungry. Well, that's not strictly true. What I actually felt was a craving for flesh so strong I would've eaten my grandmother's raw brains had they been the only meat available. Instead I rushed into one of Brick Lane's many Bangladeshi restaurants and wolfed down a beef curry with a gusto that bordered on maniacal.
