A Vanderburgh County councilman Wednesday called tax abatements "corporate welfare," and he was the lone vote against giving a local company the longest abatement that can be allowed.

The abatement Azteca Milling will receive for the plant's $24 million expansion will last for 10 years and could be worth $500,000. Council members gave initial approval to the abatement a month ago. They locked in the length during their meeting Wednesday. The decision was 6-1, with Councilman Phil Hoy, D-at large, voting no.
