How Safe Are Our Playgrounds?

Playgrounds are one common denominator of childhood. Whether at a park, a school, or more recently, a child care center, children have spent many carefree days swinging to touch the sky or sliding down to the ground. Yet, for many children, these supposedly fun-filled days also bring memories of trips to the emergency room as a result of a playground injury. In fact, according to a 2002 Center for Disease Control report, the third leading cause of unintentional injuries ibr children under the age of 10 are playground injuries.
