Medicare this spring expanded its coverage of equipment, supplies, and services for home monitoring so that a broader cross-section of those who need blood thinners can do regular testing of their blood themselves, rather than having to drive to a clinic, lab, or doctor's office. Blood thinners also regularly are prescribed for people who have had a pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis, meaning blood clots in the lungs or deep-tissue areas, most often the legs, and for people who have had mechanical heart valves installed, she says.
