Medicare this spring expanded its coverage of equipment, supplies, and services for home monitoring so that a broader cross-section of those who need blood thinners can do regular testing of their blood themselves, rather than having to drive to a clinic, lab, or doctor's office. Blood thinners also regularly are prescribed for people who have had a pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis, meaning blood clots in the lungs or deep-tissue areas, most often the legs, and for people who have had mechanical heart valves installed, she says.

Holy Family Hospital's Anticoagulation Clinic has grown from 12 patients to more than 800 in the seven years since it opened, but its director, Jennifer Taylor, says it could see even faster growth in coming months due to a recent enhancement in Medicare coverage.
