Summary


Who is the first talking head in Mark Hartley's doc on "exploitation"- the sex films, road movies, demented horrors and other assorted crap churned out by Aussies in the 70s and '80s-but Quentin Tarantino. As his unexpectedly turgid lnglourious Basterds opens, Not Quite Hollywood offers a more accurate simulacrum of classic genre scuzz.

There's plenty of garbage to go around, but it's not all the same. [John Lamond]'s Emmanuelle rip-offs (Felicity) and gory slashers (Nightmare) proudly occupy the low end, while on the high end Mad Max tyro George Miller took similar material and fitted them with dazzling syntax. Even prolific producer Antony I. Ginnane, "the Roger Corman of Australia," helped shape the late Richard Franklin, whose terrific Roadgames is mostly accurately described as "Rear Window in a truck."
