MUCH OF Western thought, from its origins to the middle of the 19th century, was devoted to providing a defense against the world's insecurity, particularly the unacceptable idea of our death. In the beginning of Western culture, in Sumer, which is present-day Iraq, death was too prevalent, too ubiquitous to deny.
