On May 13, 2006, Corrections Officer Manuel A. Gonzales and Deputy Luis Gerardo Ortiz, who were both killed in the line of duty, will have their names added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC. Their names will join approximately 600 others who share their Hispanic heritage. Their stories give true meaning to one of the Memorial's inscriptions: "In valor, there is hope."

Chela Gonzales Ortiz had learned to live with the worries that come with a family member working in law enforcement. After all, her brother, Manuel A. Gonzales, joined the California Department of Corrections in 1988 and he was regularly exposed to some of the most dangerous criminals alive.
