Summary


Terri Jordan Abbott had a light afternoon with only one of her 20 students scheduled for a lesson. For seven years, Abbott, a member of the Music Teachers National Association, has been offering young pianists instruction at her rural Boonville, Ind., home. A white sign with black lettering in Abbott's front yard reads simply, "Piano Lessons."

"Sometimes, I'll play as my students arrive so they know the teacher has to practice, too," she said. That's usually after she's locked up her two basset hounds, Lilly and Daisy, outside or blockaded them in the kitchen so they won't interrupt the lessons. They have a habit of howling along with certain selections and can be a bit distracting to her students.
