A traditional Americana outfit who perform with the same tool belt as a hundred other alt-country acts before them -- mandolin, banjo, pedal steel guitar -- [Hem]'s arrangements sound as if they might have been composed 30 years earlier, when melancholic country-rock records were often mainstream favorites. That may have something to do with Hem's other secret weapons, such as the glockenspiel, the celeste (an obscure keyboard) and Sally Ellyson's mesmerizing vocals.
