Summary
HR 3579, the Credit Union Regulatory Improvement Act, would increase credit union powers by expanding their commercial lending abilities and artificially inflating their capital cushion. In essence, the bill would allow credit unions to stray even further from their mission of serving people of modest means and raise safety and soundness concerns while maintaining tax-exempt status. It is vitally important to the banking industry that we voice our concerns on HR 3579 to elected officials. Numbers count in politics, so the ABA has set a goal of having 50,000 messages sent to Congress opposing HR 3579 by Sept 1. The total number of messages sent from Texas to date is approximately 800. We should and can generate 50,000 letters from Texas alone by asking our banking families - CEOs, employees, directors and shareholders - to respond to our call to action.
