Helmut Panke has recently been appointed as the chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp. The company is in charge of the North American operations of its Germany-based parent, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. Performance has been dismal between 1986 and 1991, with US sales dropping by 44.9%, but BMW appears to be on a rebound. In 1992, sales rose by 23.5% and the company had outsold and outproduced rival Mercedes-Benz for the first time ever. According to Panke, the victory over its chief competitor was a psychological boost to BMW's employees and executives. It also vindicated the company's newly adopted marketing and production strategies, particularly the 1991 introduction of revamped, entry-level three-series with a base four-cylinder 318 model.
