I met Mary Welte in the pages of the Courier & Press archive. A two-time breast cancer survivor known as "The Hat Lady," Welte's spirit, style and generosity reached beyond typewritten words with the warmth of a quick hug from a new friend.

A story about grants from the Komen Evansville Race for the Cure served as our introduction. In 1999, Welte was given one of the first, and smallest, grants from the local Komen affiliate and apparently was overjoyed to receive it.
