Industry Trend or Event

A guide to choosing a cable management system (CMS) is presented. The CMS is a kind of interactive electronic road map for cabling and associated hardware in a corporate campus and should be developed with an eye on scalability in order to accommodate future needs. Cabling in general and structured cabling in particular tends to provide exceptional return on investment. Most enterprises upgrading a CMS want faster fault isolation, assistance in managing organizational churn, identification of bottlenecks and a centralized information repository. Key factors in purchasing decisions include what benefits will be available and to whom, whether the CMS will be used for voice and data cabling, and whether network access is needed. Other considerations include end-user skills, who will perform the initial data load, and what information will be recorded. Any system that will introduce restrictions in the future should be avoided, and companies should seek reliable information from trade publication, industry contacts and the Web.
