In our family, spring brings with it a host of reasons to celebrate: multiple birthdays, anniversaries and, this year, several graduations. So to mark these special occasions, Old Dad and I have been trying to come up with clever gift ideas.

"Clever" ideas seem harder to come by these days for those of us who marked our early parenting days buying toys like Barbie dolls and Tonka trucks, and classic games like Sorry! and Monopoly. Teenagers were pleased to have their own record player (yes, records, the vinyl kind, remember?) or portable radio (portable as in small-suitcase style). That was a time when kids longed for a pair of U.S. Keds, which was promised to help them "run faster and jump higher." (The kids never actually proved that the shoes really worked, but they had fun trying.)
