The Johnsons left good jobs in big business to tap into a new career as microbrewers.

Tim and Susan Johnson looked like a couple of deer caught in headlights as they poured glass after glass of their self-brewed amber ale to some of the 2,400 thirsty beer drinkers at the Southeastern Microbrewers' Invitational in Durham this spring. Amid sud suckers blabbering beer philosophy and bashing Budweiser, the clean-cut Johnsons, who opened a Charlotte microbrewery in April, looked a bit out of place.

"Most home brewers get into this to be rebels," says Tim, 33, a former computer sales rep who owns The Johnson Beer Co. with wife Susan, 32. "And I'm not a rebel."
