Summary

The Notorious Bettie Page, Which director [Mary Harron] co-wrote with Guinevere Turner, doesn't make fun of or condescend to anyone: not [Bettie] for either her love of nudity or her Christianity, and not Irving and [Paula Klaw] or most of the other photographers for what they do. Sure, there are sleazebags: John Willie (Jared Harris), publisher of Bizarre magazine, practically drools over Bettie (he's also pock-marked and shabbily dressed, a too obvious indicator of depravity), and a producer who might or might not put Bettie into a movie suggests that "it's always an advantage to know the producer personally" (she turns him down). But most of the characters are shown as simply doing a job.

Bettie gets work with Irving Klaw, "the pinup king" (Chris Bauer), and his sister Paula (Lili Taylor), who persuade her to do some bondage poses. No big deal-for Bettie, it's a form of acting, and it harms nobody. As for nudity, that's even less of a big deal: Bettie enjoys her body and feels she's using her Godgiven talent. She wiggles her butt, flashing a naughty-but-nice smile over her shoulder. Even when directed to snarl while wearing thigh-high boots and a corset and holding a whip, she has a glint of humor in her eyes.
