Glady's Shop Is Life-Altering

Summary

Glady Penalosa is a third-generation seamstress, having learned the craft from her mother and grandmother, both of whom owned successful sewing businesses in the Philippines. She went on to work at Apelus Tailoring and Design on Tyre Neck Road until it closed in 2008. Today, Glady owns Del'Sor Alterations and Tailoring, which specializes in light to heavy alterations, mending and minor sewing projects. Those interested in recycling their resources will appreciate her eco-refashioned clothing service that repurposes what you already own. Glady has made a dress out of drapes and fashioned a blouse out of one of her husband's shirts. Del'Sor is a combination of her mother's and grandmother's names and a testament to Glady's strong feelings about family. Concerned that sewing is becoming a lost art, Glady has taught classes at her church and for local homeschoolers. Del'Sor offers a drop-off and pickup service so you don't have to leave the comforts of your home to get quality, custom sewing. If you frequent the Churchland library, expect to see more traffic in the coming days. A fire on Christmas has forced the main branch downtown to be closed until April 1. Though the damage wasn't extensive and was confined to one portion of the building, concern for public safety resulted in the decision to close. Library services director Todd Elliot reports the library's basement made it through the fire intact and that the monthly book sale is still scheduled for this weekend. The book sale is in the library's basement and uses a separate side entrance. The library's elevator, which allowed access to the sale from inside the building, is closed during the restoration. The Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library's "Books by the Inch" sale is Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. for members only and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If your New Year's organization resolution leaves you with books you no longer have room for, consider donating them for future sales. They'll even come get them. Contact Stormy Thorson at 686-8034 or 737-2156 for pickup.
