Government Finance Officers Association - International Horizons

The International Relations Committee of the Government Finance Officers Assn. (GFOA) is committed to initiating and maintaining relationships with their counterpart associations around the world. The body hopes to achieve this goal through such activities as the creation of institutional linkages, promotion of educational exchanges and provision of technical assistance and training to poor countries. The 1994 GFOA conference in Minneapolis, MN, held last Jun. 5 to 8 was conducted in pursuit of the association's international agenda. Present were representatives from Bermuda, Hungary, Israel, Poland, South Africa, Sweden and the UK.

GFOA's international relations program.

Squeezing more service out of fewer tax dollars, decentralizing budgetary authority, and privatizing and contracting out programs are some of the latest local government reforms underway in Sweden. Governments in Israel also are concerned with cutting costs. Sweden and Israel?

As the GFOA International Relations Committee is finding, local governments in the United States and Canada share many of the same issues and concerns as local governments in other countries. Since last profiled in the February 1992 issue of Government Finance Review, the GFOA's International Relations Committee has been working to establish and maintain contacts with counterpart associations overseas.
