About $40 billion in gift certificates are bought each year in the U.S. by people who don't have enough imagination to give a real present. An estimated $1.25 billion of those certificates are never redeemed. People lose them, or forget to redeem them, or are just too busy to use them. Based on the state's population, New Jersey residents might get about 3% of the gift certificates and hold 3% of the unredeemed ones.
