How Michael Sherwood, IT director for Oceanside, CA, set up the city's network and put in place a scalable communications infrastructure, is discussed. Sherwood started by standardizing all PCs and software used by Public Safety, city government and the public sector offices. Then all city employees got a Compaq PC running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Exchange and Outlook. Sherwood decided to deploy an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network--instead of the more common ethernet--at the backbone, which gave him the ability to support voice and data at the desktop citywide.
