Bernstein, professor of clinical medicine at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Division of Immunology/Allergy Section, "Flu shots protect against two strains of influenza A and one strain of influenza B. Individuals with chronic respiratory diseases like asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema are prone to severe exacerbations if they contract the flu."
