In August, both US agencies and the WHO warned businesses to be prepared for a serious outbreak. The US Department of Health and Human Services' CDC recommend that employers be prepared to refine their pandemic influenza response plans if a potentially more serious outbreak of flu evolves during the fall and winter. Here are a few of the CDC's recommendations: 1. Understand your organization's normal seasonal absenteeism rates. 2. Set up authorities, triggers, and procedures for activating and terminating the company's response plan. 3. Allow sick workers to stay home without fear of losing their jobs. 4. Expect sick employees to be out for about three to five days in most cases. 5. Encourage your employees to get vaccinated for seasonal influenza.
