The basic rule in fitting a semiautomatic defensive firearm to the customer is to determine hand size. The compact .380 semiautomatic pistol is not recommended for customers with big hands. Smith and Wesson Corp's Model 3913 and the slim-grip models of the H&K P7 provide the best fit for women and smaller-handed customers. Guns that fit multiple hand sizes include the 9mm Browning Hi-Power and the 1911A1 pistol.
