Using IP networks for fax services still has value. Some providers of IP-based fax service are marketing their offerings as alternatives to the fax server as we know it. According to the providers, routing a fax through the company's existing Internet setup saves the cost and hassle of fax boards, phone lines and CPU management. IP-enabled fax machines go even further, allowing users to send a document as an image via e-mail. However the real savings emerge with applications like marketing and customer service, because the fax server links the information in databases and documents to potential recipients in the outside world.
