Summary
It wasn't March Madness, but it was fun and funny. I'm talking about a faculty/student basketball game hosted by the PTA at Western Branch Middle School on March 25. After seventh-grader Ashley Ackerman did an a cappella rendition of the National Anthem, the announcer asked the student team to please not "hurt or embarrass" the faculty team. I expected the faculty to go easy on the students, but no way. They were very competitive, with fancy footwork by physical education teacher and faculty coach Kevin Smith. I mentioned to principal Craig Jones that there wasn't much applause after teachers scored. He chuckled and said the crowd, mostly students who paid to see their peers duke it out with their teachers, was "definitely a biased group." The referees allowed 10 fouls per player, a good thing since teacher Michael Caine had six before halftime. When students took foul shots, "Candy" Caine turned his back to the basket and made faces at the crowd. The faculty team played all evening, in 30-minute sets, against a student team from each grade, then a mixed team. At halftime, the score was faculty 48, students 39. Then the eighth-graders, coached by parent Steve Pool, came on court and the game heated up. It ended when the refs called it at 81-81 (probably thought the faculty couldn't take anymore). Coach Steve said he was proud the kids really kept up with their teachers."
Have you seen that cross on Taylor Road that stands atop the hill next to Christ Church on Taylor Road? Pastor Larry Renfrow calls it "the little church with the big cross." The cross is 25 feet tall, built from the logs of a single tree by church member Bob Jackson, because "we want someone to know we are here." And someone does: Christ Church has had more visitations since the cross went up six months ago. Larry even got an inquiry from another church seeking advice on doing a similar project. The cross will be lighted for Maundy Thursday and will soon glow every evening. Weather permitting, there will be an Easter sunrise service at the cross at 6:30 a.m.See the full content of this document
