Judge William Abrashkin was talking about housing law and how complicated it can be.

"It's like tax law," he joked, "only it doesn't make as much sense."

Knowledge of this broad legal specialty and an understanding of its many subtleties - gained through more than a dozen years of practicing law and then nearly two dozen more sitting on the bench of Hampden County Housing Court - was one of many attributes that Abrashkin could put on the table as he interviewed last spring for the directorship of the Springfield Housing Authority.
