Summary


[Daniel Pipes] compares the new Palestinian leader to the Soviet dictator Josef Stalin who, in 1930, recognizing his country's military weakness, disingenuously renounced the desire to capture "a single foot of foreign territory." Like Stalin, Pipes writes, "[Mahmoud Abbas] shows tactical flexibility."

While Abbas' campaign statements, [Natan Sharansky] notes, were "not encouraging", he calls on the Free World to focus on Abbas' performance in allowing dissent in Palestinian society; in ending incitement against Jews and Israel in the educational system and media; in converting the refugee camps into decent living areas; and in promoting a vital and free economic society in which a middle class flourishes.

At the same press conference, Mr. [George W. Bush] said -- in regard to the desire of others that a democratic Palestinian society be created -- "If you want to be helped, here's what we're willing to do. If you choose not to be helped, if you decide you don't want a free, democratic society, there's nothing we can do."
