Education Advocates Sort Through Stimulus Package

Summary


Billy Easton, with the Alliance for Quality Education, agrees that the federal education stimulus monies won't simply make the governor's proposed budget cuts to schools go away. Governor [David Paterson] has said his school aid cuts total $700 million dollars, but Easton and others say the actual cut is closer to $2.5 billion dollars. They say that's because the governor is delaying a court ordered commitment to increase school funding by billions of dollars a year, to ensure an equitable education for the state's poorest schoolchildren. And Easton says the federal money does not add up to enough to fulfill the court's ruling.
