Edge routers replace core routers to connect enterprise networks with the Internet - Internet/Web/Online Service Information

Edge routers are surpassing all-purpose core routers in the race to power increasingly sophisticated Internet traffic. These new enterprise/public IP edges allow enterprise networks to access the Internet at speeds approaching those of the desktop connection. Enterprise networks then can meet an ISP's connection-oriented WAN network, but the transition puts pressure on the switches. Successful communication between the network domains forces the switches to handle work at wire-speed levels. Massively parallel switch routers are being designed to address the present challenge of powering data forwarding and network services. The switches also must keep pace with marketing issues, as the tightening carriers/ISP market now outsources numerous services. By comparison, ASIC-driven Internet core routers force enterprises and ISPs into the more expensive option of obtaining independent devices.
