LODGED IN THERE...Father's Day is coming up one of these Sundays. I told Sweet Thing she's taking me to Bernardus Lodge for its special Father's Day Brunch and Bocce (if I can get off the couch). There is nothing like the fresh, high-quality ingredients Cal "Rachmaninoff" Stamenov uses in that kitchen. Add the endless wine and cocktail selections and throw in bocce-that's what I'm talking about. I've got to get over to downtown Monterey and get into some pickup games with the oldtime Italians down there, polish up my hand gestures and colorful vernacular colloquialisms.
Writing of cocktails, Bernardus' bartending star ZoIe "Kamikaze" Andahazy will be reprising his afternoon cocktail hour on Saturday, June 21, from 3 to 5pm. He'll be demonstrating some of the techniques that have garnered him top finishes in bartending competitions from San Fran to Vegas, all for creating fascinating new cocktails using infused spirits, exotic ingredients and a chef's flair for mixing flavors. Cal will make the bites and [Zole Andahazy] will be shaking, stirring and straining-I'll be drinking...658-3550.NIFTY 50...Wow, Cannery Row is 50. Old folks who remember it when the canneries were operating down there must look around with wonder at how marvelously non-industrial it all appears now. With the addition of the new Clement Hotel from Intercontinental to go along with our marvelous Aquarium, the new IMAX theater and all the standards we've come to love, I'd say it's a grand time to be celebrating Cannery Row's 50th birthday. Sometimes we locals don't take advantage of how many fun things there are to do there and we lose our sense of wonder and amazement at just how special a place we live in.
