Summary
Diabetes can damage most major organs, shorten life span by 10-15 years, and it has profound economic implications. With this, the University of California Cooperative Extension formed the Agriculture and Natural Resources Health Promotion workgroup to develop a community education program that would motivated and empower people to actively seek healthcare in a timely manner, modify their cooking and eating practices, and motivate them to become more physically active. As part of the workgroup strategy, they adapted West Virginia Cooperative Extension's Take Care of Your Health: Living with Diabetes for African Americans, a collaborative, interactive, hands-on curriculum for direct community client education.
