Summary
Desmond Flynn was an extraordinary talent, and indeed a man of many talents. He joined The Insolvency Service as a trainee examiner in 1968; went off to University in 1971 -- which was thought of at the time as a somewhat surprising career move when few in The Service had a degree; graduated with honors in philosophy and economics -- and returned to The Service in 1976 as an examiner. Flynn and the author worked together in 1988 in The Service's Headquarters; and with the old guard deciding to retire, they both jumped up one step -- the author to Inspector General and Flynn to Deputy Inspector General. Flynn's retirement was announced in early 2007. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. His was an outstanding career, and he was an outstanding man. Flynn's family's nominated charity for donations is the Garden House Hospice, where Flynn spent his last days.
