After 50 years of existence, the UN finds itself playing an increased role as mediator between warring countries and environmental protector, aside from attending to its own financial problems. There are indications that the UN should be managed more like an enterprise and help from nongovernmental organizations would be valuable in this undertaking. National governments are starting to lose control of their countries due to conflicts from within and some of these nations are not represented in the UN. Proponents of global governance are also needed to address the impact of global trade on ethnic and biological diversity.
