When you meet people outside of your usual network, you probably hear terms, phrases, and acronyms you are not familiar with. Every industry develops its own communication shorthand -- terms and phrases that quickly communicate ideas or information to those who understand them but frequently exclude people who are new to the business, or people for whom English is a second language. This has caused the author to start critiquing his use of business jargon and create a survey of students' knowledge of "generational" jargon. His research led him to agree that much of the misunderstanding in business communication is caused by bypassing, where the sender and receiver miss each other with their meanings. And so after his generational jargon study, he started looking for business jargon while reading business periodicals. With visions of creating an international marketing sensation, he created a Web site to promote a dictionary of business jargons.
