The board of rural electric cooperatives should prioritize succession planning to minimize the adverse effects of the retirement or unexpected departure of the general manager. It is advisable to develop a policy on Manager Search Selection policy and to update it regularly. A temporary solution to a general manager vacancy is to appoint an interim manager while the board carefully undertakes the selection process. A temporary manager come from the staff or recruited from outside. In assessing the ideal professional qualifications, the board should consider the cooperative's future and the strategic issues it faces. The qualifications that cooperative general managers should possess include integrity, leadership and vision, strong communications and interpersonal skills, and entrepreneurial and conceptual abilities. Other issues to address are compensation, management contracts and performance expectations.
