Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels said construction of the Interstate 69 Evansville-to-Indianapolis extension could begin in 2008 and finish by 2018 if lawmakers agree to a massive rewrite of the state transportation plan that would include building the extension as a toll road and possibly leasing it to private companies to run.

Daniels pitched the idea at a Monday unveiling of the revamped 10- year highway construction plan. He said some projects, including only a handful in Southwestern Indiana, could be done with current funding levels.
