Storm Damages Arizona Capitol Flagpole Again, Topples Luke Statue

Summary


A powerful storm that swept through downtown Phoenix in late August ripped a copper statue from its moorings and bent the 90- foot flagpole that sits in front of the Capitol, ripping away the flags and the rope that had been attached to the pole.

Rather than stand as a sentinel atop his perch facing 17th Avenue and greeting visitors to the Capitol complex, the statue of World War I ace pilot Lt. Frank Luke is now housed in a secure Department of Administration storage facility, said department spokesman Alan Ecker.
