In a world of increasing global competition with increasing customer requirements, reduction of business cycle time has become the focal point of competition in a wide variety of industries. The fast pace of technological changes and the need to respond quickly to international competition place a premium on a company's ability to respond quickly to customer demands. Responsiveness refers to the ability to satisfy customer requirements in a timely fashion. Marketplace responsiveness results from the application of synchronous and lean strategies that often leads to reduced cycle time in bringing new products to market. Cycle time is important to the development of new products as well as the production and marketing of existing products. These include launching a new product; filling an order from shelf stock; assembling to customer requirement; and engineering-to-order.
