A round of elected officials', then area residents', testimonials began with the solutionsoriented confession of South Bay Commissioner Joe Kyles, on behalf of "deacons at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church", who suggested, "we need to let our kids know there's a better way to go." Challenging residents to be more proactive, Kyles invited "each deacon and pastor" from the area to visit Glades Central High School from 1-2 p.m. on Oct. 2.

Capt. Simon Barnes of the Palm Beach County Sheriffs Office (PBSO) fielded questions - often negative - from the capacity audience in the South Bay City Hall chambers. "The biggest thing to understand," Barnes said, "is that this is not a city vs. city, a school vs. school, a team vs. team situation like it's beingportrayed. This threecity community is strong," Barnes said.

"We need to have a series of conversations, not just one meeting on one night," [Kenneth Jackson] said. "Instead of blaming the Sheriffs Office, let's grab five kids and talk to them about their lives," Jackson said. This concept was echoed by Glades Central High School principal Dr. Camille Coleman, who said she has a list of a small percentage of students who cause problems. "We need to buddy our students with people who will show interest in them and give them some good direction.
