Unplanned shutdowns of the New Orleans Adolescent Hospital's Dimension 400 PBX were originally thought to be caused by lightning strikes, but when problems continued, another explanation was sought. An electrician traced the difficulty to the hospital's emergency distribution system. Every time a Fairbanks-Morse 400KW 277/480V emergency generator started up, a power surge caused the phone system to fail. Even though the problem involved the facility's emergency generator, an HB277Y Sentrex three-phase 277/480V hard-wired surge suppressor with SuperPath circuitry was installed at the hospital's main emergency power-distribution panel. This approach not only eliminated the phone problem, but also provided protection for other equipment.
