This New Orleans native has had a stellar decade and is showing no signs of letting up. Highlighting his life is his first movie, the screen adaptation of his stage play, Diary of a Mad Black Woman was the number one box office movie, starring Kimberly Elise, Shemar Moore, Steve Harris, Cicely Tyson, and of course Tyler Perry, who played three roles. This movie won five of seven awards nominated for the 2005 BET Comedy Awards and Tyler's performance was nominated for MTV"s 2005 "Breakthrough Performance Male" Award. In 2005, Perry filmed his second movie, (also one of his stage plays), [Madea Simmons]'s Family Reunion, starring Blair Underwood, Boris Kodjoe, Maya Angelou and Cicely Tyson. When it was released Feb. 24, it stayed number one at the box office for two weeks.

TP: Well, the 'Madea' character is about to take a hiatus, so I wanted to write a book that would give the people who love her more insight into her background, who she really is...Madea used to be a stripper whose stage name was "Delicious" (laughs) so, while she's on break, they can pick it up and read about her.
