Consumer confidence loses ground.
September Results
The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index, which had declined in August, slipped further in September. The Index now stands at 96.8 (1985=100), down from 98.7 in August. The Present Situation Index declined to 95.5 from 100.7 in August. The Expectations Index was virtually unchanged, 97.6 versus 97.3 last month. The Consumer Confidence Survey is based on a representative sample of 5,000 U.S. households. The monthly survey is conducted for The Conference Board by TNS NFO.
