Consumer confidence continues to Erode.

October Results

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index, which had fallen sharply in September, plummeted further in October. The Index now stands at 85.5 (1985=100), down from 97.0 in September. The Present Situation Index fell from 125.4 to 107.6. The Expectations Index dropped from 78.1 to 70.8.

The Consumer Confidence Survey is based on a representative sample of 5,000 U.S. households. The monthly survey is conducted for The Conference Board by NFO WorldGroup, a member of The Interpublic Group of Companies (NYSE: IPG).

Consumers' assessment of ongoing conditions was much less positive than in September. Consumers rating current business conditions as "bad" rose from 18.3 percent to 20.6 percent. Those rating conditions as "good" declined from 22.3 percent to 18.9 pe...
