At Quest Diagnostics, "the more people you have who've got diabetes, the more you can count on your costs going up," says Fred Williams, director of health benefits management. He says from 5 to 7 percent of Quest's 41,000 nationwide employees have diabetes.

With the cost of treating diabetes threatening to explode, more companies are launching programs to help employees prevent and manage the potentially deadly illness, whose complications can include heart disease, stroke and blindness. John Rowland, the company's health and welfare benefits administrator, says that while medical costs are rising and diabetes is a concern, Chubb is "certainly not seeing the kind of [diabetes] cost increase described by Medco."
