2010 - Where will Communications Be?

The working environment of corporate communicators in the year 2010 shall be radically different from that of 1994. Sophisticated information systems will be in wide use by then, with integrated database and telecommunication technologies becoming an essential part of a communicator's workplace. The changeover to such a set-up, however, shall occur in an evolutionary, rather than a revolutionary manner. One reason for this is that most organizations will be reluctant to make investments in expensive new technologies until their value is commercially proven. And even then, such investments will more likely be taken up only by large organizations, with smaller companies only following suit when these new technologies become absolutely essential to commercial success. Other changes that are likely to be in place by the year 2010 are the widespread acceptance of telecommuting and the granting of flexible working conditions to most practitioners.
